Mechanical Engineering Professor: Employment of Dimensional Metrology at KU LEUVEN

KU Leuven has a vacancy for a full-time professor (junior or senior) in the field of dimensional metrology. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent research background, a strong orientation towards collaboration with industry and educational excellence in the field of dimensional metrology and manufacturing technology.

The successful candidate will lead the manufacturing metrology group within the mechanical engineering research department. The department is involved in a large number of national and international research projects ( It is also very successful in valorization activities, including the creation of spin-off companies (eg Nikon Metrology, Materialise, 3DSystems-LayerWise, Siemens Industry Software). Manufacturing is one of the areas of intervention of the department.

The new professor will also become a member of the Pedagogical Faculty of Engineering Technology which offers academic but implementation-oriented engineering programs on seven campuses across Flanders. The main teaching tasks will be located at the Group T Leuven Campus (, an international and entrepreneurial engineering campus in the city center of Leuven. Each year, more than 2,200 students enroll on campus in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in engineering technology offered in English and Dutch.

The faculty, department and campus can rely on a strong research and teaching infrastructure, extensive regional, national and international networks and relationships with companies and non-profit organizations in Belgium and abroad. foreign.

To research

Modern manufacturing involves producing products of increased complexity with increasingly tight tolerances and with targeted surface textures. This presents increasing challenges on the development and improvement of new metrology concepts that enable robust and traceable measurement and quality control. Examples of such measurement challenges include complex internal structures made by additive manufacturing and micro-features with nanometer tolerances. Additionally, the need for increased productivity requires high measurement speeds as well as portable and traceable in-process metrology. Data processing may involve the processing of large amounts of data and may require the application of AI principles.

You will thus develop an international research program in the field of dimensional metrology. Your research will focus on dimensional and surface metrology of complex parts using advanced, multi-sensor systems (e.g. tactile, optical and/or X-ray CT), using the well-equipped manufacturing metrology laboratory from KU Leuven ( Your research will also focus on traceable in-process measurements that allow real-time monitoring of dimensional and/or surface quality during manufacturing operations in an Industry 4.0 context.

You engage in focused scientific research, leading to doctorates and publications that meet international standards and lead to wide international recognition, and support the development of a network of (international) academic and industrial organizations, including through exploitation of research results and through the provision of industrial services, aimed at strengthening industrial innovation.

You provide high-quality training in the bachelor’s and master’s programs of the Faculty of Engineering Technology of KU Leuven, with a clear commitment to the quality of the program as a whole. You also contribute to the educational project of the faculty/university through the supervision of master’s theses and as a supervisor of doctoral students.

Your first teaching duties will be dimensional metrology courses at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels on various campuses. You have a keen interest in next-generation engineering education and are prepared to grow throughout your career towards substantial educational engagements in the field of metrology and manufacturing technology.

You develop your teaching in line with KU Leuven’s vision of activation, blended education and research and make use of the possibilities for the professionalization of teaching offered by the faculty and the university.

You are prepared to provide scientific, social and internal services according to personal needs and interests.

You are willing to carry out applied research projects in collaboration with industry and government and to establish a network of industrial partners.

You actively participate in promoting the Faculty of Engineering Technology to future students and participate in the faculty’s information and public relations activities.

You have a doctorate in a relevant discipline.

You have a mixed teaching and research profile. The quality of your research is evidenced by publications in leading international journals, books and international conference proceedings. You have demonstrable qualities related to academic education. International experience is a strong asset.

Industrial experience, an extensive network in the relevant industrial sector and/or a solid history of collaborations with industry are a plus.

You have organizational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership abilities in an academic context.

Fluency in English is required.

The official language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of your employment, KU Leuven will offer you language training to enable you to participate in meetings.

Before teaching lessons in Dutch or English, you will have the opportunity to learn Dutch, respectively English, to the required level.

We offer full-time employment in an intellectually stimulating environment. Depending on your record and your qualifications, you will be appointed or tenured in one of the senior faculty ranks: assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor. In principle, junior researchers are appointed tenure-track assistant professors for a period of 5 years; after this period and a positive evaluation, they are definitively appointed (or established) as associate professor.
