Nemkumar Banthia – UBC Civil Engineering

Nemkumar (Nemy) Banthia is Professor Emeritus and Canada Senior Research Chair at the University of British Columbia. His main area of research is sustainable concrete infrastructure, with a focus on nano-modified fiber reinforced composites, ultra-high performance concrete materials, waste recycling, fracture analysis, reinforcement seismic and sensor-based structural health monitoring. He also leads the Indo-Canadian Center for Innovative Multidisciplinary Partnerships to Accelerate Community Transformation and Sustainability (IC-IMPACTS) – a Center of Research Excellence – as Scientific Director and CEO.

One of the most cited in the field of concrete materials and structures, Dr. Banthia has worked tirelessly to understand the performance of concrete structures under various loading and environmental conditions, has developed many advanced concrete materials high-performance fiber-reinforced materials, designed innovative materials testing methods in the laboratory and in the field, and developed new sensors for monitoring the condition of structures. Dr. Banthia holds 9 patents, has published over 450 peer-reviewed articles and edited 20 volumes. He serves on the editorial boards of ten international journals and is editor of the J. of Cement and Concrete Composites, a journal with the highest impact factor in the field.

His awards include the Wason Medal from the American Concrete Institute, the Solutions Through Research Award from the BC Innovation Council, the Wolfson Merit Award from the Royal Society of the UK, the Killam Faculty Research Award from the Killam Foundation, the Horst Leipholz from the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, Mufti Medal of Excellence from the International Society for Infrastructure Health Monitoring (ISHMII), and Science and Technology Leadership Award from the Drishti Foundation. Recently, Dr. Banthia was recognized by the UBC Alumni 2018 Achievement Awards Selection Committee as the Distinguished Recipient of the Global Citizenship Award. This award is given to a UBC alumnus in recognition of significant community or volunteer service that has achieved international recognition and made a global difference. In 2018, the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology awarded him the Excellence in Technology and Innovation Award. Most recently, in 2020, IIT-Delhi presented him with a Distinguished Alumni Award for Contributions to Teaching and Researech.

Dr. Banthia is a Fellow of American Concrete Institute, Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, Indian Concrete Institute, Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and of the Royal Society of Canada.

As part of IC-IMPACTS, Dr. Banthia believes that the most effective way to improve the lives of global citizens is through sustained nationwide research collaboration in science and technology. . Through his leadership, IC-IMPACTS has demonstrated that such collaboration brings innovations that transform lives. Supported by the Indian and Canadian governments, the $60 million Center is involved in applied research with India in water, infrastructure and public health and is dedicated to bringing cutting-edge technologies to communities in Canada and India. Its lasting impact is already being felt through its many demonstration projects in Indian and Canadian communities. In 2016, Dr. Banthia’s work in India was awarded the Global Medal for CSR Leadership and Excellence.
