The Bayonne Bridge project wins the first prize for civil engineering from the ASCE

The Bayonne Bridge Navigation Authorization Project received the highest project honor from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

On March 13, the bridge overhaul won the organization’s Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award, awarded annually to the project that best exemplifies superior skills in civil engineering and represents a significant contribution to the progress and society of civil engineering. . The award was presented at ASCE’s annual gala on Outstanding Projects and Leaders.

Using a one-of-a-kind construction sequence, HDR’s design team partnered with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to raise the new Bayonne Bridge deck 64 feet above the existing roadway and within the existing arch structure. Using this method, vehicle and vessel traffic could continue during construction. The increased clearance allows larger vessels to pass under the bridge en route to the ports of Newark and Elizabeth.

As the lead design company in a joint venture with WSP USA, HDR designed the new deck for the main span of the bridge, the historic arch reinforcement for increased wind load and the new segmental concrete approach superstructures. . In September 2017, the old roadway was removed and the first post-Panamax freighter passed under the new bridge without incident. All four lanes of the new bridge were opened in February 2019.

A panel of nine judges chose the award recipient on the basis of originality and innovation; ingenuity in planning and solving design challenges; sustainability considerations; and project planning and delivery.

The Bayonne Bridge was also named the No. 1 Bridge Project in the Roads & Bridges Top 10 2019.
